My name is Richard Thomas Reilly.  I am an author.  I am a husband.  I am a father.  I am a bureaucrat.  I am a teacher.  I am a minimalist.  There are many things you can call me.  When you get to the heart of it, I am a writer.  I have written four novels.  I have written multiple short stories and flash fiction pieces.  I have written endless poems.  I have written dozens of columns.  I even was a ghostwriter for a short while.  No matter where I go in life, I always come back to writing.

I started writing in eighth grade.  We were being taught by a student teacher in our English class.  Our homework assignment was to write a poem.  I wrote a poem about a sunset behind the Rocky Mountains.  The thing is, I didn’t stop.  I had the first big crush of my life that year.  I ended up writing romantic poem after romantic poem.  By the end of my eighth grade year, I even willed up the courage to give one of the poems to her.

She ignored me.  It didn’t matter.  I found something I loved.  When my friends discovered that I was writing, they forced me to show them my work.  After a while, I gave in.  I was rather surprised when they told me they loved the poems.  The encouragement kept me going.  I kept writing poetry, but it evolved.  I started telling stories rather describing pure emotion.  I even started writing in prose.  It was the transition that I needed.

While in college, I finally challenged myself to finish a long-term project.  I had several ideas for novels, but never completed one.  While on break one day, I took out a notecard and wrote down a couple sentences about a story I wanted to write.  A few days later, I had a rather romantic moment with a girl I had fallen deeply in love with.  Before I could control myself, I started writing.  For the first time, I was on track to write a full-length novel.  Twelve months later, I wrote the final sentences to my first novel – The Fire Saviors.  In the year that followed, I competed its sequel, The Saints.  I have yet to complete the trilogy.  I don’t know if I ever will.  These are books of my youth and I have outgrown them.  In the years that followed, I wrote a more literary-based novel called Stitch – which gave me my first experience in literary writing.

It wasn’t until 2012 that I felt like a good author.  Over the course of six weeks, I wrote the best piece of fiction I have ever produced.  The Stagner Chronicle employed the style of oral history.  I am addicted to this style of writing and expect it to be my main form of writing for years to come.  I completed the editing job before I left for the Peace Corps in 2013.  If you would like a free E-Book, just click on the tab to the left.  All I ask for is a little feedback.

I married the love of my life in 2015.  In 2018, we conceived our first child.  A few months later, we received a diagnosis that would change the course of the pregnancy.  As a way to deal with what was happening, I wrote more than I had in many years.  Those writings can be found here. In 2020, we welcomed the arrival of our second son.

As for now, I don’t really know what comes.  I am focused on raining my sons and being the primary breadwinner in my household.  I will never stop writing and this will forever be my portal.  Please subscribe and you will be updated each time I most anything new.

With love,
Richard
